Winter Semester
Religious Education at State School as a Subject of Formation, Culture and Inspiration
(elective course)

Basic aim of this course is to approach and consider Religious Education in terms of three aspects, which are of a pedagogical importance. These are the following: a. Formation, b. Culture c. Inspiration and Creativity as well.
The course is structured in two parts:
1st Part: the aforementioned aspects are examined from a theoretical point of view. More precisely:
-Regarding the Formation aspect, it is explained why religious education is an indispensable part of the state school curriculum forming part of the General Education of pupils.
-In relation to the cultural aspect, the relationship between the subject of Religious Education and culture in general is analyzed, while the discussion topic is to what extent the indigenous cultural environment of the pupils can contribute to the cultivation of a meaning in their life and to the development of their critical thinking.
-Regarding the inspirational and creative aspects, a question is posed on which way students in Religious Education can gain not only new knowledge but also broaden their horizon of spiritual orientation. In other words, it deals with how Religious Education is able to bring inspiration to young people
2nd part, the students write and present their assignments and essays during the course. The aim of their work is to identify theological elements in musical works (i.e. music, painting, literature etc.) of their own preference; they also submit their own proposals regarding the teaching methodology that should be applied in order for these artworks to be integrated effectively into the teaching process of Religious Education.

Spring Semester
Fundamental Issues of Education Sciences
(compulsory course – 4th semester)

The course presents basic elements of the Science of Education. The following topics are examined:
- The scientific nature of Pedagogy.
- Its scientific object and its relationship to both the educational sciences and the humanities.
-The methodology and methodological challenges of pedagogical empirical research.
Additionally, it provides a historical overview of the Education phenomenon, as developed among the peoples and religions, in philosophical tendencies and ideals, which, in certain cases, extend to present day.
The course also offers fundamental principles of the science of Education:
- Potential and necessity.
- Main terms.
- The pair “student – teacher”
- Goals of Education, Teaching and Pedagogy.
- Learning contents, methods and media.
- Important pedagogical institutions.
- Contemporary pedagogical issues.
- Special Education.
- Lifelong education and learning.

Education Sciences and Theology Encounters

Basic aim of the course is to explore and highlight certain dimensions of common interest developed in the sciences of Education and Theology. Taking this perspective as a point of departure, a dialogue is being attempted between the two sciences, emphasizing issues relating to the prospects of human existence, and the meaning of the education task as well.
In particular, the following aspects are examined:
- The specific characteristics of the pedagogical process
- Freedom and self-determination of man as fundamental concepts of the pedagogical process
- The Freedom of man as a fundamental axis of the Christian ethos
- Relations between education and religion
- Philosophy of education and orthodox theological anthropology
- The importance of the concept of formation in relation to the modern challenges facing the school educational reality

Basic aim of the course is to explore and highlight the relationships developed between Orthodox Theology, Religious Education and Public Sphere, as it has been shaped in modern Greek reality. Taking the above perspective as a point of departure, the following axes are explored:
- Conceptual definition of public space
- The Public Space in Greece today
- The impact of the Orthodox Church regarding the way of life that characterizes modern Greek society
- The importance of Orthodox Theology on issues related to the Public Space of Greek reality
- The relationship between Public Space and Public Education
- The relationship between Public Space and Religious Education
- Religion as a course embodied into the Curriculum of public school
- The distinction between Religious Education and Congregational Education
- Religious Education oriented to orthodox tradition and life and its impact for the Public Space in Greece
